Message from the Principal

Dear Parents and Community Members,

Otto Petersen is a beautiful school, with state of the art architecture, where students have access to current technology at every grade level. As the principal, I am proud of the hard work our students are doing. I am continually impressed with the quality of teaching going on in all of the classrooms at Petersen, the level of compassion that all the staff have for our students and the supportive families in Scappoose.

The students at Petersen have made great academic gains over the past several years. In 2015-16 we were identified as a bright spot for our region from Oregon Department of Education. While we continue to be in focus school status, we were rated favorably once again for our academic achievement during the 2015-2016 school year.

Our focus school goals for the 2016-2017 school year are to continue to improve the health of the core. This means that we will continue to provide a high quality instructional program using a researched based curriculum and high impact teaching strategies. Our teachers have the opportunity to attend trainings in these strategies from experts in the field and to use those strategies in the classrooms. In addition to improving the health of the core, we will expand the use of data to make decisions about how to target support for those students who need an extra boost to acquire grade level skills in both reading and math. We will provide this extra boost with intervention classes at every grade level in both areas to all those students who are not performing at grade level.

This year we will begin to provide more enrichment opportunities for students who may benefit advanced courses of study. We will be working this year to increase our communication to the community about the great things our students do every day in our school. We encourage parent participation and we are always looking for volunteers. Our community is growing quickly and we are excited about outreach opportunities and hope to collaborate with community businesses this year.

Otto Petersen is a PBIS school. This means we intentionally recognize the positive behavioral choices that the students make. We emphasize being Safe, Responsible and Respectful. If your student attends Petersen and brings home a “hooty” that means that they have demonstrated one of these positive behaviors.

I am excited about the 2016-17 school year. I expect great things from our students, staff and families at Petersen, it takes everyone working together to make Petersen a Great Place to Learn.

Thank you,

Whitney Hessong
